Insomniac Reveal Sunset Overdrive DLC – The Mystery of Mooil Rig

Insomniac Games have today unveiled their first “story-based” DLC – The Mystery of the Mooil Rig – that is set to release on December 23rd. The announcement came via Sunset TV, Insomniac’s weekly video updates that are injected into the game via in-game streams that laugh hysterically at the fourth wall as it crumbles into nothingness.

The newest episode features special guest host Larry “Major Nelson” Hyrb, the award winning Director of Programming for Xbox Live. The video reveals the first pieces of info about the upcoming DLC, here’s the lowdown:

  • The Mystery of the Mooil Rig will release on December 23rd
  • It will cost $9.99 (USD) or will be free to Season Pass holders
  • The DLC will include new weapons, traps, amps and chaos squad objectives, as well as a new original story and new area to explore
  • The add-on will include new aquatic traversal mechanics
  • The video also reveals a new type of aquatic mutant

The Mystery of the Mooil Rig takes place on a large oilrig off the shores of Sunset City. The player will receive a distress signal from the oilrig which, when investigated, will lead the player right into the middle of a “violent turf war between disgruntled and well armed workers”. As the area will be completely surrounded by water, Insomniac Games have included two new types of aquatic traversal moves: Water Dive and Water Slam Bounce.

The Water Dive will allow players to dive underwater for a short time before jumping out and the Water Slam Bounce will allow players to melee smash into the water and launch themselves high into the air (similar to the dive-bomb bounce). Both of these new moves can be chained together and will transfer over to the main game. This is especially exciting, as it was exceptionally frustrating to not be able to keep a combo going when travelling over water.

Check out the reveal below and keep an ear out for Larry hinting at the new “rivet gun” weapon…
